Artemartis’ presentation in the 12th edition of 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair at Somerset House in London from 10-13 October 2024, marks the debut participation of the Accra-based art group at an international art fair and one of the first art collectives participating in the fair.
The presentation features work on canvas exploring the intricacies of personal and collective life in West Africa through realistic and expressive figuration as rendered in the art of Ali, Muhammad and Mishio, while in the art of Hunke and Yaro rich mixed media abstraction is used to similarly portrayal daily realities in Ghana in the public and private realm.
“1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair offers our artists another platform to increase their visibility on the world stage. I am looking to give our artists long-term growth and sustainability. We have done shows all over the world. Each year we provide new opportunities for exposure to our artists and this year we decided to apply for 1-54,” remarks Selasie Gomado, founder and director of Artemartis.
“Participating in 1-54 with Artemartis is an incredibly personal and thrilling experience. It feels like a significant milestone. Being able to share our collective vision alongside so many diverse and vibrant artists is a true honor. The fair’s celebration of African creativity adds an extra layer of meaning to this moment for me. This debut serves as both a professional and personal achievement. It’s an opportunity to showcase my collaborative projects and ideas on an international stage, demonstrating how our collective creativity can push boundaries. ” – Courage Hunke who is presenting work from his latest project, which delves into Accra as an archive, conceptualizing the city as a repository of collective memory. These new works explore how Accra’s urban landscape holds and reflects the shared experiences and histories of its inhabitants.
